Dr. Ilze Zigurs - Professor
Department Chair
Mutual of Omaha Chair
Ilze Zigurs is a Professor and the Mutual of Omaha Distinguished Chair of Information Science and Technology. She arrived at UNO in the fall of 2001, having taught at the University of Colorado for thirteen years. Her Ph.D. is from the University of Minnesota, where began her long-standing fascination with technology for teams. Her research focuses on the intersection of information technology with collaborative work in an increasingly virtual world. She has studied such issues as the design and use of group support systems, roles of people and technology in meetings, and information management and negotiation processes in high-conflict situations. With the drive to “e-business” and virtual collaboration, she is now studying effects of technology designs and implementations on virtual projects and team processes. Professor Zigurs’ teaching emphasis in systems analysis and design is a natural fit with her research. Since systems development is inevitably done in teams, any technology that can leverage the effectiveness of teams—wherever located—has the potential to improve development processes.
Professor Zigurs serves as Editor-in-Chief of the e-Service Journal. She is on the editorial board of Information and Organization, and formerly served as Senior Editor of the MIS Quarterly and Department Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management. She has published in such journals as MIS Quarterly, Journal of Management Information Systems, Journal of Organizational Computing and Electronic Commerce, and Group Decision and Negotiation, among others. She is co-editor with Laku Chidambaram of a book, Our Virtual World, which examines both positive and negative impacts of the Internet on individuals, organizations, and society in their work and personal lives.
Professor Zigurs is a Maverick from two decades ago, having completed her Master of Business Administration degree at UNO in 1980. She worked in the systems field for several years before returning to academia, and continues to believe strongly in the importance of successful partnerships and knowledge sharing between the two communities.
