My research focuses on the intersection of information technology with collaborative work in an increasingly virtual world. I began studying collaborative technologies in the mid-1980s, primarily in a face-to-face meeting environment and from both theoretical and applied perspectives. For example, I have examined how the design and use of group support systems affects such things as participation and influence patterns, roles that people and technology play in meetings, and information management and negotiation processes in high-conflict situations. With the drive to “e-business” and virtual collaboration, I am beginning to study technology design for making virtual projects possible and capturing knowledge from dispersed team members. These topics fit well with my teaching interests in systems analysis and design. Since systems development is inevitably done in teams, any technology that can leverage the effectiveness of teams—wherever located—has the potential to improve development processes.
