INTRODUCTION

The course will cover the development and need for issues regarding social, legal, privacy and the application of computer ethics to information technology. In addition, this course will cover the HIPAA legislation for health care professionals and deal with other ethical issues in bioinformatics.

This course is intended for undergraduate management information systems (MIS), computer science (CS) and bioinformatics majors. It is a required course for the Information Assurance (IA) concentration and an elective course for MIS majors. Beginning Fall 2003, it will be a required Humanities course for MIS majors.

This website will act as a companion to the course. On the Main Page, you will find class announcements, as well as information on project and assignment references. Check this page regularly to keep up with what's new in the course.

On the Syllabus Page, you will find a full course syllabus for your perusal.

If you lose your paper copy, you can easily print yourself a new one! If there are changes to the class schedule Class Schedule, it will be reflected in the online versions of the course outline.

On the Resources Page, you will find files to download and web-links to traverse. As we move through units, I will supply you with extensive bookmarks that will allow you to review and conduct research for your projects.


ANNOUNCEMENTS

This class meets on Tuesday afternoons from 2:30 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. in PKI 160 - Distance Education Room. In addition, there will be a Distance Education or Internet-Based section that will be coordinated by Dr. Pietron. Your instructors for this course are: Dr. Leah R. Pietron and Maury Schooff.



PROJECTS & ASSIGNMENTS

The class will utilize a case analysis approach to the class. You will have a primary textbook (please refer to the syllabus) and casebook. Additional resources and references will be taken from the web.
